Social Inclusion Week for County Kildare

Posted: 20 September 2018

Plans are well underway for the 2nd Social Inclusion Week for County Kildare which will run from Tuesday September 25th to Saturday September 29th.

Given the success of the 2017 Event, Social Inclusion Week has now developed into an Annual Event. Again, this year, the week's Activities are being coordinated by County Kildare LEADER Partnership in association with Kildare Public Participation Network. A Calendar of Events is now in place all across the

County, in each of the county's Municipal Districts (Athy, Celbridge/Leixlip, Kildare/Newbridge, Naas and Maynooth) and the statutory/voluntary service providers and community groups will host events to highlight the good work that various groups are undertaking, to highlight social exclusion issues throughout the County.

"There are many initiatives in County Kildare that do excellent work, providing services and supporting individuals and communities affected by issues like homelessness, poverty, unemployment and addiction" stated Pat Leogue, General Manager of County Kildare LEADER Partnership. "In addition, there are groups and organisations providing wonderful support for people with disabilities, Travellers, older people, victims of domestic violence, asylum seekers and refugees. The purpose of Social Inclusion Week is to highlight this excellent work and the need for more resources to cater for the needs of people in County Kildare who experience poverty and social exclusion daily" added Mr. Leogue.

Declan Nolan of Kildare Public Participation Network noted the contribution of Community and Voluntary groups also, and the role they play in building inclusive and supportive communities. Mr Nolan said "Community/Voluntary groups are the heartbeat of the Community. They often give people a common identity & sense of belonging, including people that may be marginalised for any reason, be it economic, physical, mental or social. For many people, community groups are a life line and a way to get involved in their community. They can give a person a sense of purpose & a real connection to their locality/county. We are aiming to highlight and celebrate those groups during Social Inclusion week, some of which people may not be familiar with. It is an opportunity for us to participate, belong & realise it is my community, my county. To say #Imincluded"

Anne Crowe from KARE is delighted to be involved in Social Inclusion Week, "This Week is about encouraging people to engage and connect with their local community and this links directly with KARE’s Vision that people with an intellectual disability are seen as equals and take part in society with everyone else" outlined Anne.

"KARE would like to thank the groups that we are already in partnership with and invite others to get involved.  We are also seeking opportunities for us to get involved in new or established groups throughout the County to ensure that our communities are inclusive and affords opportunities for us all to grow and develop" concluded Ms. Crowe.

Social Inclusion Week 2018 runs from: Tuesday, September 25th - Saturday, September 29th throughout Kildare.
