JohnnyAthy celebrates musical heritage

Renowned musician Johnny Marr unveiled a 'Made in Athy' plaque on Friday afternoon 2nd November at Andersons, Emily Square, Athy.

Johnny played a sold out gig in the National Stadium in Dublin that Friday night, as part of his world 'Call the Comet' album tour, which includes over 60 dates.

The 'Made in Athy' project is supported by Kildare County Council Arts Office.  

Johnny Marr is best known as the guitarist and co-songwriter of the Smiths, with Morrissey

The other 2 members of the Smiths were bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce

Critics have called the Smiths one of the most important bands to emerge from the British independent music scene of the 1980s. 

The Smiths were active from 1982 to 1987 and released 4 albums, The Smiths, Meat is Murder, The Queen is Dead, and Strangeways, Here We Come.

Johnny played guitar with a number of other bands and artists including the Pretenders, The The, Electronic, Modest Mouse and the Cribs and he has worked with Talking Heads

Johnny released his first solo album, 'The Messenger', in 2013, and his second album 'Playland', in 2014. 

His third solo album, 'Call the Comet', was released in June 2018.

Johnny Marr was born in Manchester to Irish parents.
